How to Make Classroom Decorations with AI

AI can save teachers time in many ways, including making classroom decorations. From blog posts to podcast episodes, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a super popular topic this year. And if you’ve joined me at a workshop or for a webinar, you know I love sharing new ways to leverage this technology.

We usually think of AI as working behind the scenes, and it doesn’t seem particularly tangible. But we can use this technology to help us create things we interact with in physical spaces, too. If you want to create classroom decorations throughout the school year, AI-powered tools like chatbots and image generators can help save you time and gather lots of great ideas.

Today on the blog, I’ll share some tips for how you can use AI to create engaging classroom decorations!

Why Use AI for Classroom Decorations?

With the help of AI, you can quickly generate ideas, refine them to match your vision, and even use a chatbot as a collaborator to bring your own ideas to life. From designing posters to creating custom welcome signs, AI tools can handle various tasks. AI tools can help you create unique and personalized classroom decor. I have a handful of ideas for your consideration, all of which are ready for you to customize.

You can make the ideas in this blog post your own. Add extra information to a prompt, such as your role (ex., I am a Social Studies teacher) or information about your students (ex., My students love winter sports). Or craft a prompt that includes examples of tools you have access to in your classroom. For example, you might add, “We love to add QR codes to our bulletin boards, and my students have access to iPads.”

How to Make Classroom Decorations with AI

Here are some specific ways to use AI to create your own classroom decorations. If you have any ideas to add to the list, let me know all about it! Reply to one of my weekly newsletters (sign up for free here), or reach out to me on Instagram.

Create a Welcome Sign

Use Adobe Firefly to design a welcome sign that captures the essence of your classroom. The text creation feature (scroll down on the page to access it) lets you describe the kind of text you want to use. You can create a sign that says “Welcome” with apples or yellow pencils in the background. These can be hard to read, so you want to make sure whatever you create is going to be accessible to your students.

    Make Reminder Posters

Do you make posters in your classroom to remind students of procedures and expectations? You can generate AI images with Canva’s Magic Media and turn them into vibrant posters to decorate your walls. For example, you might make a poster to remind students to wash their hands and post it near the sink in your classroom. Instead of a picture of a sink, you can create a custom image, like having your school mascot washing their hands and use that for the poster.

      Make a Musical Bulletin Board

On the blog earlier this year, I shared AI music tools I love. One favorite is MusicFX, which lets you create a short piece of music using a text prompt. This tool lets you download the file or share it as a link. Since you can save the link, you can take one more step and turn it into a QR code. Having a QR code gives you oodles of options for classroom decorations. Take a look at this blog post on using QR codes for even more ideas.

        Ask a Chatbot for Ideas

When in doubt, ask AI for help with your classroom decorations. Chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can help you gather ideas. It can act as a collaborator or thought partner whether you’re starting from scratch or want to refine your ideas. How does this work? You can start simple by using prompts like, “Our upcoming unit of study is [TOPIC]. Give me ideas for classroom decorations.” Of course, you can get even more specific by adding more to a prompt. Such as “We have a bulletin board space” or “I want classroom decorations to hang from the corner of my classroom.”

Gathering ideas and creating resources for your classroom decorations might not seem like an obvious way to use AI this school year. However, incorporating AI into your classroom decoration process can transform your space into a vibrant, engaging learning environment. AI-powered tools like the ones I shared in this post can save you time and add a creative edge to your decorations.
