Are podcasts part of your daily routine? I’ve been an avid podcast listener for about a decade. Whether it’s a podcast featuring technology news or current events or an interview with a reality television star, I listen to several hours of podcasts each week. Podcasts have become a staple in so many educators’ lives, too. You might listen to podcasts for teachers, a favorite show that covers sports, or another topic you love.
Over the past five years, I’ve hosted the Easy EdTech Podcast, where I share educational technology tips and interview educators from all over the world. So, you can imagine that I’m always curious about how people listen to podcasts. Most of my listening time is playing on my phone, whether it’s on a speaker or streaming through my headphones or car stereo. But it isn’t the only way to consume this medium.
Today on the blog, we’ll look at how to listen to podcasts on TV. This includes using your television as a way to consume this primarily audio medium.
Listening to Podcasts on a Television
While most of us may be accustomed to listening to podcasts on our smartphones or computers, there’s a whole other dimension available. Smart TVs offer a convenient way to experience podcasts, leveraging their powerful speakers and large screens to enhance your listening experience. In the same way we might have turned a radio on in the past, you can play a podcast through a television in your home.
How to Listen to Podcasts on Your TV
Let’s explore the steps on how to make this happen!
Find a Podcast You Love
Start by picking out podcasts that match your interests. Whether it’s educational content, current events or professional development resources, there’s a podcast out there for everyone. You might already have a favorite podcast (or three or four) you listen to each week. I love listening to podcasts that cover the news, like Pivot with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway, and podcasts that cover television and movies, like The Watch and The Rewatchables.
Open Up a Smart TV
Turn on your Smart TV and navigate to the home screen, where you can access various applications. Every television is a little different, and you might have a television that accesses the Internet with a Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, or AppleTV.
Access a Smart TV Podcast Player
Install a podcast player if you haven’t done so already. Popular platforms like Spotify or YouTube are available on most Smart TVs and provide access to a vast library of podcasts. Head over to the App Store on your television to download an app that plays podcasts.
Search for Your Favorite Podcast
Use the search function in the podcast player app to look up your favorite podcast. If you have an account with the service and are signed in, you can also navigate to your “followed” list to quickly find podcasts you regularly listen to on a podcast app on your phone.
Extra Tip: Use your TV remote’s voice command feature, if available, to search for podcasts hands-free.
Podcasts are a fantastic resource for learning and entertainment. I’ve discussed on my Easy EdTech Podcast how educators can use podcasts for professional development. You might remember this episode with Matt Smith all about this topic.
Not only can you listen to podcasts on a TV, you can stream podcasts on an interactive whiteboard. In a classroom, this is a great way to share podcasts with students, too. Not sure where to start?
