Summer Reading Initiative and Resources from myON

What does summer reading look like in your community? This past June I met with the folks at Renaissance and myON. During my conversation with their passionate team members, they shared a few exciting things happening this summer.

Summer Reading Initiative

This summer, have increased access to text for students across the country. With this initiative, all children (from birth to eighth grade) throughout New York state and New York City. They will now have access to thousands of age-appropriate digital books through myON this summer. As a former New York City public school teacher, my ears perked up when they shared this news!

Families in New York City and New York State can participate in this program for free. It gives children access to books and resources to support their summer reading. Students can access these digital books on any device and read from anywhere. This particular program was designed to support statewide and citywide literacy and equity initiatives. With the resources from Renaissance and myON, kids can continue to develop their reading skills throughout the summer. This link will take you to more resources on this initiative.

In addition to the summer reading initiative happening in New York, Renaissance and myON have also shared resources in other corners of the country. In Atlanta, they have worked with the Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy. This school was struggling with outdated textbooks and low-interest in reading across their school. Earlier this year, the Tuskegee Airmen Global Academy rolled out myON.

The students now have access to thousands of new digital books. In addition to boosting student morale, the school has also seen improvement in reading comprehension scores and measurable reading growth. You can read more about this particular success story in this article.
