Piano Companion Music Theory App for Students

Can an app help students learn music theory? When the team behind Piano Companion reached out to me this year, I was excited to learn more about their musical mobile app. Designed to help songwriters, producers, teachers and their students, this dynamic music theory app might just have a place in your classroom!

Piano Companion is a flexible chord and scale dictionary with a variety of special features. There are user libraries, reverse mode, and a progression builder for students. If your music students have access to a smartphone or tablet, they’ll want to have Piano Companion handy.

Learn Music Theory

How does this music theory app work? If you can’t remember the name of a piano chord or scale, Piano Companion can help you figure it out. This app will help you to find the chord or scale by keys or by using your external MIDI keyboard. With Piano Companion, you can create a custom piano chord or scale. Then you can use it for chord charts or your user library.

Piano Companion App Features

Piano Companion app shows chord and scale notes on the grand staff, degrees, relative scales, intervals, fingering for both hands in major and minor scales. You can contribute your own custom fingering too. There are over 1,500 piano chords and over 10,000 scales in the dictionary too. You’ll also find an interactive circle of fifths which lets users navigate through scale chords.

This music theory app has features you can use in the music classroom with students of all ages. It is compatible with lots of phones and tablets too!

Once you open up this music theory app, you can practice scales in different keys and clefs. In addition to this feature, you can listen to how a scale or chord sounds in the loop or arpeggiated. Piano Companion also lets you see the list of compatible chords in the selected scale or the list of compatible scales for a chosen chord.

Music Theory App

Piano Companion is worth exploring if you’re teaching music to students this year. Whether you and your students compose songs and play music on a digital device or a traditional instrument, this music theory app can find a place in your regular routine. If your music students don’t have regular classroom access to technology, this app might go on a list of recommendations for them to explore outside of the classroom too.

With over two million users worldwide, Piano Companion is a popular choice for a music theory app. Piano Companion is available on Android, iPhone, and iPad as a mobile app. So if you’re in a BYOD classroom where students bring their own device, or you have access to a mix of technology, Piano Companion can come in handy. Piano Companion is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Amazon App Store, and the Windows Store too.

If you head to this page, you’ll find the links to all of the App Stores so you can easily locate Piano Companion!
