Potato Pirates Coding Card Game for Classrooms

This summer I connected with the folks at Potato Pirates who shared their plans for a new, pirate themed coding card game. They’ve developed a card game to teach logic and strategy related to computer programming. Now in Kickstarter phase, Potatoes Pirates combines potatoes, piracy, and programming in a game perfect for classrooms.

Coding Card Game for Classrooms

The team behind Potato Pirates had the goal of providing users with an introduction to what typically amounts to 10 hours worth of programming concepts in 30 minutes. Potato Pirates is a card game that covers the same concepts one would need when coding on a computer screen. The video below gives you a quick overview of the mission players embark on as they explore programming concepts.

In this card game, players will lead a crew of potatoes on a mission to save the Potato King. There are seven Potato King cards randomly in the deck. Then players have to collect all seven Potato King cards by roasting, mashing and frying their opponents. The goal of Potato Pirates is to brings teachers and students, parents and kids, friends and strangers together. This happens when they explore abstract computational thinking concepts – all related to computer programming.

Coding for Kids

The Potato Pirates card game was created by Codomo. If you haven’t heard of them before, Codomo is a Singapore-based education technology company. They are also focused on nurturing children’s creativity through empathy, technology, and design education.
