5 Surprising Features of Duolingo for Schools

Did you know that Duolingo for Schools is free for educators? To be honest with you, I assumed that just like the super popular language learning app, using Duolingo with students would come with a price tag. So you can imagine how excited I was to learn that it is totally free with lots of special features designed with students and teachers in mind.

Today on the blog, I’ll take you through the awesome features of Duolingo for Schools. We’ll look at all of the ways you can use this powerful language learning app with students this school year.

5 Things You Should Know About Duolingo for Schools

Duolingo for Schools is a language learning app that takes everything you might already love about Duolingo to the next level. It essentially provides an additional set of features for teachers that allow teachers to personalize the student experience within the Duolingo app.

Free for School

Duolingo for Schools is totally free! This might be one of the most surprising things about such a robust, dynamic EdTech tool. You can set it up for your class to help students improve their language learning skills. You and your students get everything you’ll find in the premium, consumer version of Duolingo entirely for free.

Dashboard for Teacher

Duolingo for Schools gives teachers real-time updates on their students’ progress. When they log into the Teacher Dashboard, they can view each student’s language-learning practice and performance on the Duolingo app. This means they can gather formative assessment data right away and design interventions and supporting activities that meet the needs of all students. In addition, you can see students’ progress by measuring their accuracy and even monitoring the amount of time they spend learning on the platform.

Enhancement not Replacement

Duolingo for Schools offers an opportunity to enhance a student’s classroom learning experience. It provides teachers with actionable information. They can bring this data back to their classroom and help students dive deeper into language practice outside the classroom. In addition, I love how Duolingo for Schools gives kids a way to apply what they are learning using adaptive, mobile-friendly technology.

Mobile App Access

When teachers set up a Duolingo for Schools classroom (click here to get started), their students can access Duolingo free from the mobile app. They can open up Duolingo on an iOS or Android device for language-learning practice from anywhere. The team at Duolingo shared with me that many teachers using this platform find their students using their Duolingo accounts to practice long after their classes are finished for the year. With the individualized, gamified nature of Duolingo, you can also help students build lifelong learning skills.

Redesigned Platform

Did you already know that Duolingo for Schools was totally free, gives teachers access to a special dashboard, acts as an enhancement, and provides kids with mobile access? Then this last item on the list of five is for you. Duolingo for Schools recently redesigned its platform. It now includes more explicit learning objectives and deeper insights into student progress. Thanks to the input of teachers already using the platform, these updates reflect feedback from the current user experience. For example, teachers asked the team to implement deeper insights into student learning.
