At the beginning of this month I shared the modern data analytics tool Schoolrunner, which provides schools and districts with actionable data to drive instruction. This comprehensive data management system has lots of great features including the ability to simplify attendance and create, implement and edit goals to fit your school’s changing needs.
In terms of parent engagement, there are a few things you’ll find in Schoolrunner that help connect families with their school community. There is the ability to quickly and easily generate Progress Reports and Report Cards whenever they’re needed. This means that teachers can download and share information with families at anytime of the school year.
Increase Family Engagement
In addition to the Progress Reports and Report Cards, Schoolrunner has a special feature called Slips. Slips are used by lots of schools as a way to print out weekly summaries to send home to parents. A Slip is simply a weekly recap of all behaviors and academics entered for their child into the Schoolrunner platform. This is also the first view families will see when they log in to Schoolrunner’s Student/Parent Portal. This log lets students and families access information at any time to see real-time updates for their child. This includes everything from behavior and attendance, to academics.

The Schoolrunner mobile app also makes it easy for educators to get in touch with families. As shown in the video above, teachers can use the app to call a parent directly from their device. They can log the details of that communication in Schoolrunner. This is helpful in a number of ways. For example, it helps a school better understand who is communicating with someone at home and when those calls have taken place. It also explains what communication with a particular family has been like in the past. This information can be used when a teacher is getting ready to call home, since they can check the communication history first to make sure that this isn’t the family members third or fourth call from the school that day.
