Bilingual Current Events
This allows native Spanish speakers and other English Language Learners the opportunity to build foundational knowledge on the topic and be able to participate, no matter how limited their English comprehension skills are. It also allows students to bridge the content by seeing side-by-side Spanish and English vocabulary that they can then use to participate and produce work.
Some teachers have used this feature to allow Spanish speakers to read the article in their native language first. The students use this first reading to gain background and develop a foundational knowledge by doing a close reading. Then the students can join the a reading group and participate with the English version of the text for ELA growth.
