Transform Independent Reading with MoxieReader Blended Literacy Program

Earlier this year I had the chance to connect with the awesome folks at MoxieReader. They are passionate about the power of independent reading. So they developed a tool to keep readers organized at home and at school. MoxieReader is a blended literacy program for school and home that digitizes and personalizes independent reading. It features book scanning and tracking, leveled book recommendations, and motivation to read through personalized reading plans. Independent reading is an important part of a child’s day. This tool helps children self-monitor their reading progress and learn about new books they might be interested in exploring.

 Reading with MoxieReader

If you haven’t heard of MoxieReader before, it’s a mobile and desktop app where teachers and students access the core product. Available as an app for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Chromebook, and browser-friendly, MoxieReader lets teachers and students ditch paper reading logs so students can focus on enjoying reading. The folks at MoxieReader describe their tool as one that, “acts like a fitness tracker for a student’s reading” and I love this analogy. Students can take ownership of their reading life while teachers can gather actionable information and insights into their student’s reading.

The Teacher Dashboard lets teachers manage their use of MoxieReader and view details of their students’ activity. In the Teacher Resource Center there are resources ready to use in the classroom. They are perfect for Independent Reading activities and to support the use of MoxieReader. In addition to these resources, the folks at MoxieReader have also created a Teacher Innovator Group on Facebook (click here to join) where teachers cans share ideas and favorite strategies for independent reading.

Blended Literacy Program

MoxieReader recommends books to students based on reading level and interests, and has a strong social component to encourage conversation and interaction about books and reading. This tool can motivate students through a team-based game system that connects individual reading to peer team members and their teachers. At the same, MoxieReader provides goals for students. It supports teachers and reading coaches with alerts if any of their students need extra support.

As a former New York City teacher it was really cool to learn that MoxieReader was conceived at the Startup Weekend Education NYC in the summer of 2016. They ran a pilot program with over 100 teachers this past spring with lots of positive feedback. This past summer, the team at MoxieReader rebuilt the app and the Teacher Dashboard. It’s now iPhone, Android and Chromebook ready for this school year and they are offering something special for back-to-school.

The team at MoxieReader is offering a special promotion during the month of September. So just head over to their website and use code launch1999$special to get the 60% off launch special. Then it is only $19.99 for an annual teacher subscription. Learn more about MoxieReader by visiting their website!
