11 Must-Have Tech Resources for Parents

As a classroom teacher, parents often came to me looking for mobile apps, websites and resources. They want to find the best digital tools to help their children grow as students. This list can be shared with families at a back-to-school night or open house. You might choose a few of these ideas to share on a monthly newsletter. Alternatively, you could simply forward this blog post to families. Here are a few of my favorite tech resources for parents!

Reading at Home

Storyline Online is a website full of read aloud videos with well-known actors reading classic children’s literature. EPIC! is a mobile app that awards badges for reading books. Families can sit and read a digital text together or monitor children’s reading behavior on their independent books. Dr. Seuss Treasury includes a bookshelf full of picture books for children to explore. Parents might also like TED-Ed which has videos that can provide background knowledge on new reading topics.

Math Practice

LearnZillion has lots of videos and resources for parents who want to help their children solve Common Core Math problems. Yodel Oh! Math Mountatin and Oh No Fractions! are two great apps to practice computational fluency. Curious Ruler is another fun tool for connecting math to the real world. It uses household items to practice measurement.

Class Communication

With Remind parents can sign up anytime in the school year and teachers can send text message alerts to them with special updates. Classdojo is used around the world to keep parents informed on student behavior. Teachers can tap on their screen or interactive whiteboard to assign points to children throughout the school day. Seesaw is a digital portfolio that lets parents see their child’s creations. Students can snap a picture to upload their classwork for a teacher to review and send home for families to see too!
